The sugar debate continues to be a hot topic when it comes to our health and so it should be. Our main problem is over consumption, many of us indulge in sugary snacks without even noticing the amount of sugar in them. It seems that we’re consumed with a sugar addiction – or at least a very bad habit.
Diets high in added sugar are linked with insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes and obesity, all related to heart disease. In our view, consumers are growing more conscious of hidden sugars and its dangers regarding weight gain, tooth decay and increased risk of diabetes. This has now been publicly highlighted in the NHS Public Health Report findings – In 2014, 58% of women and 65% of men were overweight or obese. In addition, Mintel reports that since 1996, the number of UK diabetics has more than doubled from 1.4m to 2.9m and is estimated to rise to 4m by 2025.
Following these findings, Government announced last year that as of April 2018 sugar-filled soft drinks will see a tax hike to combat these problems.
For parents, these statistics can be shocking and as responsible adults, how do we cut down our children’s sugar intake especially when we must give in to their non-negotiable snack demands?
