Rice Crispy Cakes | The Healthier Twist

We have decided to give this classic treat a healthy twist. With only a few ingredients, its easy to make and will satisfy your sweet tooth!

We also have a range of flavoured chocolate bars to choose from including white, mint and orange chocolate if you want to make them a little more flavoursome.

SERVES: Makes 12-16 small squares
PREP TIME: 15 minutes
SET TIME: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS
– 150g / 2 x 75g packets of Free’ist sugar free marshmallows
– 3 cups / 100g unsweetened rice puffs
– 3 tbsp coconut oil
For a chocolate version:
– 225g (3 x 75g bars) Free’ist chocolate of choice

METHOD
1. In a large saucepan melt the coconut oil over a low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir continuously until they melt together  creating a fluffy mallow mixture!

2. If you are making a chocolate version, whilst you prepare the marshmallows, melt your chocolate by placing the broken pieces in a bowl and put over a  saucepan of water with a medium heat. The hot water should heat the bowl and melt the chocolate. Stir  until the chocolate is a liquid consistency. Remove from the heat.

3. Remove the marshmallow mixture from the heat and add the rice puffs to the pan, stirring through to evenly coat the puffs with the marshmallow mixture. If you are making a chocolate version, add the chocolate and stir again until chocolate is evenly distributed.

4. In a small greased baking tin (18x20cm is perfect) pour your rice-puff mixture and spread to a height of 5-6cm. Try not to press the mixture down too hard, to keep the lightness of the marshmallow in each square.

5. Leave to set for 20mins at room temperature. With a sharp knife cut into squares. You can keep these in an air-tight container for 3 days.

Gluten-Free Pop Up Shop Opens in Dublin

Unglu-d is a Gluten-Free Shop that has re-opened its doors this year for a longer duration due to the increased demand for Gluten Free Foods.

The shop itself is situated in Unit 3 Royal Hibernian Way, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 and has partnered with a variety of big brands including Free’ist to bring consumers a special Gluten-Free Shopping Experience.

The creator of Unglu-d is Aileen Markey, a Coeliac herself. She was diagnosed a couple of years and decided to test the concept of having a store completely dedicated for Coeliacs and individuals who are Gluten Intolerant.

According to the Ireland Coeliac Society, Ireland is considered one of the countries with the highest coeliac disease  rates in the world. A possible reason for this may be the Irish diets, which are historically rich in Cereals and Wheat laded foods.

Unglu-d are stocking our Free’ist Gluten-Free Range which includes our six Chocolate Bars, Popcorns, Marshmallows & Jams.

Sugar Free S’mores

A S’more is a traditional camping snack that has been popular with kids and their parents for years. Although many different varieties of S’mores have developed over time, the S’more is basically a sandwich of roasted marshmallows & chocolate between two biscuits.

Here at Free’ist, we have developed our own variety – SUGAR FREE S’MORES

Once you’ve done one, you’ll want to do s’more and s’more..

PREP TIME: 5 minutes
COOK TIME: 2 minutes

INGREDIENTS
Free’ist Sugar Free Tea Biscuits (Buy here)
Free’ist Sugar Free Marshmallows (Buy here)
Free’ist Sugar Free Dark Chocolate (Buy here)

METHOD
1. Over a bonfire, campfire or BBQ toast your marshmallows for 1-2 minutes until they start to melt, bubble and caramelise.

2. Remove the marshmallows from the heat and spoon them onto a tea biscuit.

3. Top the marshmallow layer with a square of Free’ist dark chocolate and top the s’more sandwich with another tea biscuit. Press together to allow the chocolate melt into the hot marshmallows

If you don’t have an open fire you can always recreate this recipe using the microwave or oven.

On a plate (or baking tray if using the oven) place a tea biscuit, topped with three Free’ist marshmallows and a square of dark chocolate.

Microwave for 15-20 seconds or oven cook at 180 °C for 3-5 minutes, so the marshmallow and chocolate start to melt. Remove and top with a second tea biscuit.

Sugar Debate – The Unsweetened Facts

The sugar debate continues to be a hot topic when it comes to our health and so it should be. Our main problem is over consumption, many of us indulge in sugary snacks without even noticing the amount of sugar in them. It seems that we’re consumed with a sugar addiction – or at least a very bad habit.

Diets high in added sugar are linked with insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes and obesity, all related to heart disease. In our view, consumers are growing more conscious of hidden sugars and its dangers regarding weight gain, tooth decay and increased risk of diabetes. This has now been publicly highlighted in the NHS Public Health Report findings – In 2014, 58% of women and 65% of men were overweight or obese. In addition, Mintel reports that since 1996, the number of UK diabetics has more than doubled from 1.4m to 2.9m and is estimated to rise to 4m by 2025.

Following these findings, Government announced last year that as of April 2018 sugar-filled soft drinks will see a tax hike to combat these problems.

For parents, these statistics can be shocking and as responsible adults, how do we cut down our children’s sugar intake especially when we must give in to their non-negotiable snack demands?

Do Not Fear – Sugar Free Alternatives are here

Within the past few years, there has been growing demand for more sugar free products as consumers are increasingly after more choice. Sugar Free snacks are a great alternative if you can’t face going cold turkey on tasty treats, which is no way to live!

The Free’ist aim is to help you, the consumer, reduce your sugar intake whilst still being able to indulge in tasty treats without feeling “the guilt”. It’s a Win/Win!

Here at Free’ist, we have a wide selection of tasty treats including chocolate bars, cookies, popcorn, biscuits and marshmallows – all SCRUMPTIOUS and SUGAR-FREE/ NO ADDED SUGAR!

Free’ist teams up with Sugarwise!

sugarwise.org is a large company with the objective of increasing attention, educating and giving people options on sugar in their food and drink, and Free’ist is the first Irish snack company to join them! Moving forward the free from food company will now use the Sugarwise Kitemark certification, which will show consumers that their wide range products are fully certified as sugar free/low in sugar.

“The decision to join Sugarwise is a further demonstration of our commitment to products which are free from sugar. Our products were rigorously tested to ensure they met the Sugarwise requirements for certification” said the managing director of Free’ist, Gerard McAdorey.

Despite the fact that Free’ist products are free from sugar, evidence would suggest that customers find it difficult to find any difference in taste from other snacks!

“Most people wouldn’t even believe it were possible, but they taste exactly the same! The Sugarwise logo is a great way for these amazing products to get themselves noticed on shelf, and we are delighted that Free’ist have joined us in our mission”, said Sugarwise founder, Rend Platings.

Based on the World Health Organisation’s guidelines on sugar consumption, of which generally no more than 5% of our daily calories should come from free sugars, the Sugarwise certification is awarded to firms which produce products which meet these standards.
